The Great Mughals exhibition at the V&A is a masterclass in the art of curating history. This ambitious showcase brings to life the Mughal Empire’s blend of power, spirituality, and aesthetic sophistication. From the outset, the exhibition emphasizes the global relevance of the Mughal dynasty, linking their artistic achievements to broader cultural and economic networks of the early modern world.
The presentation of objects is impeccable. The lighting highlights every detail of the finely carved gemstones, such as a turquoise-encrusted dagger hilt that seems almost too delicate to have been a weapon. The textiles, draped elegantly in glass cases, shimmer with gold and silver threads, while their patterns—paisleys, floral vines, and geometric motifs—reveal the Mughal love for symmetry and natural forms.
One particularly compelling section juxtaposes Mughal miniatures with European engravings, illustrating the cross-cultural exchanges that flourished under Akbar and Jahangir. The curators have thoughtfully included a detailed timeline of these artistic dialogues, along with touchscreens that allow visitors to explore the paintings’ layers of symbolism.
Equally impressive are the larger cultural narratives the exhibition weaves. The display of coins minted under different emperors is accompanied by commentary on the empire’s economic policies, while the section on architecture includes scaled-down replicas and 3D models of iconic structures like Fatehpur Sikri.
This exhibition is not merely a collection of beautiful objects; it’s an exploration of the Mughal vision of the world—one of grandeur, inclusivity, and artistic innovation. Highly recommended for anyone with a love for history and art.
